Nov 25th is ✨ International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women ✨. Today marks the beginning of the annual 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, which concludes on Human Rights Day, Dec 10th.
The day was established in honor of the Mirabal sisters, who were assassinated in 1960 for their activism against the Dominican dictatorship. Known as "las Mariposas," sisters Minerva, María Teresa, and Patria Mirabal, refused to give in to an oppressive and violent regime, and their courage inspired others to fight back.
At Ateker Merciful Hearts Advocacy Organization, we are inspired by the Mirabel sisters, and the countless women who have used their voice to speaking out against gender-based violence around the world
